On January 29, 2014, WindPower Nepal and Renewable World jointly organized a half-day event on wind called “Energy is in the Air.” It was hosted by “climate+change: a regional dialogue on the future” at the Nepal Art Council, and the event included a discussion with panelists from Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC), Asian Development Bank (ADB) Nepal Resident Mission, Renewable World, and WPN, sharing challenges and opportunities of harnessing wind energy in Nepal.

On “Global Wind Day 2013,” WPN organized a half-day seminar on “Wind Energy Development and Use: Nepalese Perspective” in coordination with Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC). The seminar brought together over 60 professionals from public, private, donors, and nonprofit communities. The main objective of the seminar was to raise awareness on wind energy among policymakers, investors, donors and other stakeholders.

WPN conducted a pre-feasibility assessment in March 2013 for the World Bank Nepal office to launch a “Fair-Wind Prototype” that uses wind energy to charge mobile phones. This technology, designed by an Austrian Company, has the potential to help consumers without electricity to have access to mobile connection, and telecom suppliers to expand their outreach. As a part of the project, WPN identified five most suitable sites in Nepal for the launch of the prototype based on following criteria:

  1. Assessing wind speed of Nepal using satellite wind data
  2. Analysis of mobile network coverage
  3. Grid connectivity and Road Access
  4. Population density, Gender and Social Inclusion

WPN participated in the “Renewable Energy Week 2013″ held from January 20-26th, which was organized by AEPC to promote renewable energy in Nepal. As a part of the program, WPN had a display stall in Bhrikutimandap, where it promoted awareness on wind energy for visitors.

WPN was engaged with Clean Energy Development Bank where we proposed to develop a product for ‘financing off-grid wind projects in Nepal’ named “Vayu Urja Loan” in November 2012. The proposal made it to the final round in the Frankfurt Business School – UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance.

WPN participated in the Renewable World Learning Conference where the COO Saroj Dhakal presented about “the Challenges and Opportunities in Wind Energy in Nepal.” The conference covered issues related to wind, solar, biogas, hydram, and mini-grid solutions.
